On her recent UK tour, Angie made a detour to the studio to rework Free, one of the outstanding cuts from new album Unexpected, and brought in Young Nate to ice the cake…
The results are pretty outstanding, and we hear that Free is now earmarked for a UK single release late June, with Angie jetting in for promo support!
Brilliant, right?
Stay tuned, as we’ll be posting more on Free very soon…
Check out this great review from ex-Vibe scribe Miles Marshall Lewis reviewing Angie’s recent Paris show for Generation Soul.
Writes Miles: “Commanding a seven-piece band decked out in Angie Stone tour T-shirts, the songstress whose artistry is timeless, began her hour-long set with “Play with It” (off 2007’s The Art of Love & War). And when she belted out the “you don’t wanna mess with me” refrain, truer words were never spoken. The 48-year-old singer began her career in the late ’70s as a third of pioneering female rap crew The Sequence. So when she exhorted the French to “wave your hands in the air like you just don’t care” and ran her “somebody, anybody, everybody scream!” routine, there was no pretense. Stone has more hiphop cred than the microwave pop stars half her age.”
During her whistle-stop tour of the UK last week, Angie sat with Ronnie Herel from 1Xtra to talk about the live shows and new album for Stax Records, Unexpected.
As ever, Angie speaks with candour and humour about her work … making this a must-listen!
As we mentioned yesterday, Angie Stone is in the UK for a 4-date tour to support the new album Unexpected, taking in Edinburgh, Manchester, Birmingham, and London.
This freshly-uploaded fan clip from the Edinburgh show is KILLER, and shows you just what to expect if you’re still to catch the last two dates in Birmingham (tonight) and London (tomorrow)!
The new issue of Blues & Soul has arrived, and it features a great interview with Angie in conversation with Pete Lewis.
It’s an incredibly insightful read, with Pete, as ever, getting the best from the artists he interviews.
Says Angie: “Well, I’ve been in the business for a very long time. I’ve been in groups, I’ve worked as a songwriter/producer for other people… But, at the same time, as a solo artist I think people have kinda got used to just hearing one style of Angie Stone. So I felt they needed to know that I am a diversified artist, and that I have been a part of the montage of changes in music over quite a few decades now. So, being as I’ve delivered four or five decent albums already, I felt it was safe to switch up and do something different this time. And musically overall I just wanted to have FUN! I wanted to do something that embodied a jam kinda feel, so that we could have some fun in concert and show people everything doesn’t always have to be so serious.”
Check out this great interview with Angie Stone in conversation with Black Sheep magazine.
Here’s some choice extracts:
“I’ve had my character portrayed as D’Angelo’s woman, Miss Brown Sugar and Miss Daisy Mama,” laments Stone. “I’ve had to endure ridicule over the Internet based on the choices that I have made in life in terms of the men I date. It’s got me to a place where I realise that no matter how good or bad you are people are going to talk; they’re going to point their fingers no matter what you do.”
‘Unexpected,”‘ Says Stone: “… stands for a place where I’ve been for the last 12 years but now I just don’t care anymore what they think or say because I know who I am and I know who I belong to. I belong to God: I’m a child of God. So they can say what they want.”
Wow – full and frank! The lady is speaking her mind!
